Baby Checklist. Month 3 Week 1
1. Is the 4-month growth spurt starting already? Suddenly baby wants to breastfeed all the time. I’m continuing to feed on demand — I know it won’t last forever.
2. Baby is starting to like colors! I’ve started offering more brightly colored toys instead of the high-contrast ones Serenity used to enjoy.
3. Singing, whistling, clapping, and even blowing raspberries — baby loves sounds! I have lots of fun making sound effects for baby throughout the day. This helps Serenity’s language development, too, so I’m okay with sounding silly.

4. Baby is finally getting the hang of using Serenity’s hands! Serenity is grabbing everything in sight — especially my dangling necklace or hair. Time to take off my nice jewelry for a while.
5. If baby gives me a minute to myself this week, I’ll go online and find some healthy recipes. Soon I’ll be cooking for baby, too! — but in the meantime, I want to make sure my partner and I are eating healthy, especially if I’m breastfeeding.
6. My breast milk is changing as baby grows. I’m making sure to eat healthy fats like nuts and avocados to get all the nutrition I need.
7. I’m enjoying the fact that baby’s schedule is getting more predictable! It’s tempting to use every extra minute to catch up on chores, but I’m making time to rest and unwind, too.

1. I’m working on helping baby enjoy her crib, so I got Serenity a projection soother that attaches to Serenity’s crib and projects a scene onto the ceiling. Serenity loves to look at it!

3. I’ve learned to give baby a massage. It’s fun for both of us! — it’s relaxing and soothing for Serenity, and it’s bonding for me. We’ve made it part of our bedtime routine.

4. I’m taking time to exercise regularly — at least three times a week. Even if I don’t have a lot of time, I take a quick walk with baby in the stroller to help myself relax and lower stress.
5. My partner and I talked about when we plan to start solids. Most experts recommend waiting till after baby is six months old.
6. I’ve talked with my pediatrician about when I need to call if baby gets sick. Especially if baby is in daycare, I know what symptoms to look for and when I should worry.
7. We made it past the newborn stage! My baby is officially an infant now!

1. I double-check baby’s environment for choking hazards whenever I put Serenity down to play. Anything smaller than a toilet paper roll is small enough to fit down a baby’s throat.
2. My baby’s skin is a little dry, and Serenity’s starting to get eczema, so I use a gentle hydrating cream after every bath — and apply it again throughout the day.
3. Baby loves familiar people — and right now, Mommy and Daddy are his favorites. Whenever Serenity sees one of us, Serenity smiles. Sometimes Serenity even reaches for me!

4. I’ve organized our schedules! I made a calendar with all my appointments for work and home.
5. I made a list of baby essentials that I need to have with me at all times. I’ve packed a diaper bag that can travel with baby to daycare or a babysitter, and I’m keeping it stocked with everything baby needs.
6. I’m keeping baby’s bum healthy! I chose a diaper cream that’s natural and hypoallergenic, with no petroleum.
7. Sometimes I feel like I’m talking to myself all day long, because I’m constantly talking to baby — and even singing to Serenity. I sound silly, but baby loves it! And I know it will help develop Serenity’s language skills, so it’s worth it.

1. My baby’s growing! Serenity eats 4-5 oz of formula at every meal. If I’m breastfeeding, I don’t need to measure how much Serenity eats — I just feed Serenity on demand.
2. Baby can figure out where a sound is coming from! When Serenity hears something that interests Serenity, Serenity turns Serenity’s head and locates the source of the sound with his {name}’s eyes.
3. My baby seems a little constipated — Serenity’s not pooping every day, and when Serenity does, it’s hard. I move Serenity’s legs in a bicycle motion to help get his digestive system moving.

4. I’ve set up the baby monitor, and it’s my new best friend! I can get stuff done on the other side of the house while baby is napping.
5. I really don’t feel like getting it on right now! I’ve never been so uninterested in sex. I know that breastfeeding can affect my sex drive, and my partner and I talked about how I’m feeling and how we can work together to stay connected even when I’m not feeling inspired.
6. My lactation consultant thinks that dairy I eat might affect baby, so I’ve cut milk out of my diet temporarily to see if it helps constipation or eczema.
7. I think my partner and I are ready for our first real date night! We’ve hired a babysitter, and we’re going to go out for a short dinner in the early evening. We’re prepared to come home early if baby gets fussy.

3. Baby is starting to get picky about who holds her {name} — and just when we were feeling ready for a babysitter! Serenity needs time to get to know new people.

4. I’m taking care of my health by keeping caffeine to a minimum and drinking plenty of healthy liquids like water and fresh juice.
5. My partner and I had a heart-to-heart about chores. Between childcare and household jobs, there’s a lot more that needs to be done these days! We talked about how much each of us can do and how we can work as a team.
6. I made a list of emergency contact numbers for babysitters. It includes our cell phone numbers as well as poison control and our pediatrician’s number. I hung it somewhere visible like the fridge or right next to the phone.
7. I’m working on remembering who I am apart from being a mom. I took an hour this week to rest and do something just for me.

1. When I dangle objects in front of baby, Serenity follows them with Serenity’s eyes.
2. I never thought I’d say this, but I’m starting to be able to put baby down when Serenity ’s sleepy but still awake. Serenity can sometimes put himself to sleep if I catch Serenity at just the right time!
3. My baby has had Serenity’s two-month checkup, which included a lot more vaccinations! The two-month vaccination series includes the first dose of rotavirus, the first dose of DTaP, the first dose of Hib, the first dose of PCV13, and the first dose of IPV.

5. I don’t have much time for make-up these days. But I’m getting the hang of putting on a couple of things quickly — some lip gloss and mascara or eyeliner, so I can feel a little dressed up without spending a lot of time.
6. I squeezed back into some of my pre-pregnancy jeans! Sure, they used to be my loose, comfortable jeans, but hey, I’m finally out of maternity clothes! I’ll take it.
7. I’ve thoroughly researched my daycare provider. They have plenty of experience with young babies, they’re certified, and they know infant first aid and CPR.

1. I’m getting really good at knowing what my baby is saying. I’m learning to read Serenity’s cues, and know if Serenity’s hungry or tired — usually even before Serenity starts to cry.
2. I thought all those freezer meals I prepped when I was pregnant were going to last forever, but now they’re starting to get a little low. Time to start cooking again.
3. My baby’s immune system isn’t fully developed, so I’m making sure to protect Serenity from germs. When we’re out in public, I keep sanitizer handy, and I never give Serenity a toy or pacifier that’s fallen on the ground.

4. I’m making sure to stay hydrated, especially if I’m breastfeeding. I bought some extra water bottles so I can always keep one filled and nearby. 
5. My partner and I have talked about choosing a babysitter. We’ve started making a list of instructions about our baby’s bedtime routine so we can get an evening babysitter when we feel ready.
6. My baby startles easily. If Serenity hears a sudden noise or if I put Serenity down too quickly, Serenity throws Serenity’s arms out and then pulls them back.

1. My baby is starting to pay more attention to the world. Serenity notices sounds and looks around to try to figure out where the sound came from.
2. My baby tries to reach for things! When I put Serenity in the play gym, Serenity looks at the different colors and bats at the hanging toys. Baby doesn't really have control of Serenity’s arms yet, but Serenity seems to enjoy trying.
3. If I’m breastfeeding, I’ve talked with my lactation consultant about how my food affects baby. We’ve discussed whether I should make any changes to my diet.

4. My doctor said I can start regular exercise, so I joined the gym! I plan to work out in the evenings while my partner spends some quality time with baby.
5. My partner and I aren’t ready to leave baby with an evening sitter yet, so we’re planning some “date nights in.” We’re taking some time to focus on each other and stay connected.
6. I had my 6-week postpartum doctor visit. I talked with my doctor about my birth control options and about whether I’m ready to start exercising.

1. Milk or formula is all my baby needs! I know not to give baby any water. Even if it’s really hot outside, breastmilk or formula gives Serenity all the hydration Serenity needs.
2. I’m giving baby a chance to experience different textures and colors. I put different fabrics on the floor for Serenity to touch during tummy time so Serenity can explore the sense of touch.
3. My baby is starting to get better head control. I still support Serenity’s head when I lift Serenity, but it doesn’t feel like lifting a bobble head toy anymore.

4. I’m getting plenty of opportunity to use those cute bibs I got at my baby shower! Baby drools a lot, so I keep a bib on Serenity all the time.
5. Is it really time for me to go back to work already? I decided to start back on a Wednesday to give myself a short first week back. This will help me ease back into work.
6. I’m going to spend some quality time with baby! — I signed up for a Mommy and Me class like a yoga class or a postpartum exercise class.
7. I got my hair done! I told my stylist I need something that’s quick and easy for me to style at home.

4. Breastfeeding should be pretty established at this point. If I have any pain when baby latches, I’ll schedule an appointment with a lactation consultant.
5. I still sleep when baby sleeps, but if I have the energy, I try to spend some one-on-one time with older kids during one of baby’s naps.
6. Breastfeeding is not birth control! My partner and I have talked about our plans for birth control after I’m ready to resume intimacy.

2. I’ve been feeling a little down and stressed. It may just be the “baby blues,” but I’ve scheduled an appointment to talk with my doctor about my risk for postpartum depression.
3. How do I feel about pacifiers? My partner and I have talked with our lactation consultant and decided whether we want to introduce a pacifier.

4. My baby knows me! Serenity turns Serenity’s head toward my voice and studies my face while I’m talking.
5. Ouch. If I had an episiotomy or tear, I’m adding a few drops of tea tree oil in my bath to help me heal faster.
6. I’m getting my energy back! If I had an uncomplicated vaginal birth, I might be ready to start light exercise with a short walk around the block.
7. Baby is sleeping most of the day, but only for a few hours at a time. I’m doing my best to sleep whenever baby does so I can get some rest during the day. We probably won’t be sleeping through the night for a while!

1. My partner and I are both so tired after bedtime, sometimes we barely even talk! This weekend, we’ll take one of baby’s naptimes to sit down together and have a real conversation to reconnect.
2. Baby can turn Serenity’s head from side to side and look up and down. I’m working on teaching Serenity to nod “yes” and “no!”
3. Baby and I love to listen to music and dance! I hold Serenity in my arms and turn on my favorite tunes, and we dance our cares away. Serenity also likes to lie on the ground and do some “dancing” of Serenity’s own!

4. I’m doing something simple special for me this week to help me feel pretty, like painting my nails or taking a long shower and doing my hair.
5. I finished babyproofing, and I’m ready for baby to crawl! I’ve got locks on cabinets, everything breakable is moved out of reach, and I’ve checked all the windows for strangulation hazards.
6. Whenever baby’s around, I say the name of everything we see to help Serenity learn new words. Sometimes I catch myself doing this when baby’s not around, too!
7. If it’s allergy season, I’ll watch baby for any signs of asthma or allergies like coughing and wheezing. If I notice any symptoms, I’ll talk to our doctor.

1. My baby’s crib might look sparse right now — no blankets or pillows! I use a sleep sack to keep Serenity warm at night.
2. It may just be a reflex, but it’s still the sweetest thing when my baby grabs my finger if I touch Serenity’s palm. Serenity also has strong opinions — Serenity cries to tell me how Serenity feels! Right now Serenity can only see black and white patterns, not colors, so Serenity likes to look at patterns with strong contrast.
3. I’m in the “fourth trimester,” and I still look pretty pregnant! I’m wearing comfortable clothes, like the maternity pants I wore in the first trimester.

4. I’ve got my baby’s safety kit ready with a digital thermometer, a night light and a nasal aspirator.
5. If I plan to pump, I’ve got a good electric or manual pump. An electric pump is essential if I need to pump full-time; a manual is fine if I’ll only need to pump occasionally.
6. Is my baby getting enough to eat? Sometimes it’s hard to tell! If I’m concerned, I won’t hesitate to ask my pediatrician or lactation consultant.
7. Baby doesn’t get very dirty right now, but I’ve learned how to give Serenity a sponge bath. I won’t be using the baby bath or putting Serenity all the way in the water till after his cord falls off.

1. My baby got Serenity’s first vaccination — a dose of Hepatitis B that’s given at birth. I also scheduled my baby’s first doctor appointment.
2. Who knew poop would ever be so interesting? I’m counting my baby’s diapers to make sure Serenity has at least 6 wet ones and 3 dirty ones every 24 hours.
3. I’m hungrier now than I was when I was pregnant! I need 300-500 extra calories if I’m breastfeeding, so I’m eating at least 2,000 calories every day.

4. We’re ready to bring baby home! I washed all the baby clothes and bedding in a hypoallergenic detergent that’s designed not to irritate baby’s sensitive skin.
5. This hospital underwear is pretty practical. I’ve bought some disposable underwear of my own and some extra-long pads to protect me during postpartum bleeding.
6. I’ve got a postpartum support belt or wrap to support my belly as I’m healing. If I had a C-section, I’ve also bought some scar healing cream with vitamin E.
7. If I plan to bottle feed, then I’ve got the right equipment. My newborn needs small, 4 oz bottles and stage 1 nipples. I’ve also got a bottle brush to keep my bottles clean.

1. I’m totally baby’s favorite. Serenity laughs and smiles when I come into the room and cries when I leave. It breaks my heart, but it also makes me feel like the most important person in the world!
2. Without knowing, I may do something silly that tickles her funny bone and out come the first chuckles. These are priceless sounds that I want to hear again and again.
3. I never, ever leave baby on a bed, changing table, or any other high surface. Now that Serenity is rolling, it’s even more important that I always follow this safety rule.

4. I think it’s time for another date night. I’ll try to find a babysitter this week so my partner and I can go out for a little while, even if it’s just for a quick coffee.
5. If I don’t already have a nasal aspirator, I’ll get one this week. Baby’s first cold is probably coming soon, if Serenity hasn’t had one already!
6. My partner and I are making time for sex again, but things are a little different these days. If I’m breastfeeding, it’s totally normal to leak milk in the middle of an intimate moment. I know this is nothing to be embarrassed about (and my partner might even get a kick out of it)!
7. I talked to my pediatrician about when baby should start solids. I also asked about good choices for baby’s first foods. I’m looking forward to this new culinary adventure!
