As soon as your period ends, a hormone called Follicle Stimulating Hormone ( FSH) is secreted into your bloodstream by the pituitary gland, a small bean-sized gland that lies just behind your eyes in your brain. This hormone acts in your ovaries, which sit at the end of your fallopian tubes and contain many thousands of eggs. You were born with about three million eggs, but by puberty these will have degenerate to about 400,000. All of these eggs are exposed to FSH, and it is unclear why only a few are recruited to start developing.
