Baby born at 31 weeks: what's the outlook

Babies born at 31 weeks are preemies. Because they're premature, their lungs are not strong enough and their immune systems are not fully formed, they're susceptible to health problems like RSV, apnea, infections, jaundice, and anemia to name a few.

If your baby is born at 31 weeks, be prepared to have them stay in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) for several weeks until they can breathe on their own, weigh at least 4 lbs., gain weight steadily, and can breast or bottle feed.
