It is common for a mom to tear during delivery. There are multiple degrees of tears, some are minor and some are major. Minor tears are very common. As the baby descends through the birth canal the vagina and tissues stretch. Sometimes if the baby comes out too fast they will not be able to stretch quickly enough and may tear. Perineal massage and support from your medical team can help reduce the risk of tearing and damage.
