My baby has a heart murmur: what does it mean?

Technically, a heart murmur is simply a noise heard between the beats of the heart. When a doctor listen to the heart, she hears a sound something like lub-ub, lub-dub, lub-dub. Most often, the period between the "lub" and the " dub", and vise versa is silent. If there is any sound during this period, it is called a "murmur". Murmurs are extremely common, and usually normal, occurrences. However, heart murmurs that can be heard during the first six months of life require the attention of a pediatric cardiologist.

When my daughter was born, the doctor heard a heart murmur. Her pediatrician was concerned and sent us to a pediatric cardiologist. I won't lie, I was terrified. I had no clue what this meant and whether or not my daughter would be OK.

Thankfully my husband was able to go with us to her appointment..I don't know that I would be able to do it on my own. They did several tests and told me that the type of hole that she had was something that usually closed up on it's own. However, to make sure, they wanted to see her again at one year and then again at two years old. At her two year appointment, we were told that the hole completely closed up and they could no longer hear the heart murmur!

For most babies, a hole in the heart will take care of itself. However, some babies need to have surgery. A surgeon will either stitch the hole shut or they will put a piece of surgical covering over it and eventually the heart will heal itself and grow over that material.

one of our children had a heart murmur and they diagnosed it as some heart issue that she would probably outgrow and she did by the time she was school age.
