When does the cervix change during late pregnancy?

Message length 300 characters recommended

In early pregnancy your cervix will close, increase in length and develop a mucous plug to seal it shut. Your cervix should remain this way until your third trimester. During the weeks before labor your cervix might begin to shorten or thin (effacement). The cervix will soften and you might lose your mucous plug. Your cervix might also begin to open which is know as dilation. These changes can happen weeks before or they might not happen until during active labor.
