In the beginning of pregnancy the cervix will close and become long and thick. The cervix will develop a plug of mucous to help seal it shut. During the third trimester the cervix will begin to thin out which is called effacement. The cervix is about 2.5 inches long when it is closed and not thinned out. Some women will experience effacement during the final weeks or pregnancy and some wont have any effacement until they are in labor. During labor it will efface until it is paper thin.
