Preschool phonics: does it help with reading?

Maybe I'm old school, but I think that phonics is definitely necessary when teaching a child to read.

When I started teaching our children their alphabet, I would also teach them the letter sounds. Some children "got" them right away, others struggled right up through their reading lessons in 100 Easy Lessons.

We would also try to enunciate our words to help them hear the sounds more distinctly.

Our reading book 100 Easy Lessons is phonics based and allows for lots of repetition and has worked well for us. When I leave off some of the repetition in the lessons, I think it has hindered our progress in our child learning to read and in remembering the sounds.
