Fifths disease is one of a few virus's that can pass to the fetus during pregnancy. It is very rare for an adult not to already be immune to Fifths disease and it is very rare for the fetus to catch it from a non-immune mother. When a fetus does catch Fifths disease that odds are not good. Fifths disease can cause severe symptoms in the fetus that are life threatening. The virus attacks and kills the blood and bone marrow of the fetus which causes anemia that causes hydrops fetalis. Hydrops fetalis is severe swelling and accumulation of fluid in the baby. The good news is it is rare for a fetus to catch Fifths disease.
