Autism and positive reinforcement for discipline

Children with autism often have a difficult time understanding what the world around them wants from them. They benefit from very solid ideas and can be confused by figures of speech. If you were to say something like "Wow, you did that lightning fast!" they may get confused and wonder why you said that, when really you were trying to be encouraging. If you change it up though and say "I'm very proud that you stayed focused on your work and now your homework is done!" they will find that much easier to understand.

Therefore, when it comes to positive reinforcement make sure you are speaking in solid ideas and not abstract ones.

You know, I don't think any mother aims to be a single mom. I didn't wish for that, but it happened.
