How long does it take to stop lactating after you stopped breastfeeding

For me, it took about a month for me to stop lactating. I wasn't making a ton of milk and E wouldn't nurse so I eventually moved to formula when she was around 2 months old. Then, it took a month.

One thing, I would change next time is I might to do it more gradually. For 2 months, I had pumping every two hours... And then when we decided to stop suddenly, it was superbly painful.


For me I barely produced any milk, so in the end it was not even worth trying to squeeze out the half an ounce every few hours. My son was barely getting 3-4 ounces of breast milk a day and the rest was in formula so I decided to stop, and within a day or two that was it. It had been gradually getting to be less and less anyway but I'm sure for mothers that are able to breastfeed it may take a lot longer.
