Regular dental exams and cleaning are safe to do during pregnancy and highly recommended. Pregnant women are at an increased risk of gingivitis and regular cleanings can prevent this. Other dental work such as filling a cavity or removing teeth should be discussed with your dentist and OBGYN. There are risks and benefits of each procedure and they should all be considered before making a decision. In some cases it is best to wait until after birth for having dental work done. But some cases, such as an infected tooth, it is best to have it taken care of right away. You and your medical team should come up with the best plan for you and your baby.
