A healthy diet in pregnancy contains the right balance of carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins and minerals.

Protein: meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy products. You need 2-3 servings of protein-rich food every day.

Carbohydrates: Complex carbohydrates are found in starchy foods such as pasta, wholegrain bread, brown rice, potatoes, and legumes.Try to include 4-6 servings a day of any of the following: 1 slice of wholegrain bread; 2-4 oz of wholegrain pasta; brown rice, and potatoes; 2 oz of cereal.

Since fruits are a good source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber, you should make sure you eat about five portions a day.

Fats. For a healthy fat intake, trim the fat off meat, use butter sparingly and choose low-fat varieties of dairy products and half-fat hard cheese.

Dairy products. Aim for 2-4 servings of dairy products each day; typical portions are 1-2 oz of hard cheese or 1/2 pint of reduced-fat milk.
