My son didn't have his diagnosis when we were potty training so I didn't realize he might have issues until we were in the throes of potty training. One thing that a lot of kids on the spectrum dislike is loud noises. So, when I would clap and cheer for him as he used the potty it totally freaked him out. And he also hated the sound of flushing. I had to really rethink things and pretty much make no noise at all, almost ignore it, when he used the potty. Then I would help him wash his hands and when he left the bathroom I would flush. If you have a child on the spectrum these might be things to think about!

If I had realized then all that was going on with him around 3, I would have waited til he was really ready.

You know, I don't think any mother aims to be a single mom. I didn't wish for that, but it happened.
