I was told by midwives and obs to start at least 3 months before trying to conceive. It's good to have the additional folic acid as it is one of the most important vitamins to have in the first trimester. Also it is good for the man to take folic acid before trying to conceive as well. They say it increases the chance of becoming pregnant.

I started taking mine when trying to conceive.

I've been taking prenatal vitamins since last fall when we decided to do this reversal of my tubes.

I started taking prenatal vitamins before I started TTC. So when you start planning is the right time to start taking them. It prepares your body for the pregnancy. It does not help you conceive though.

You can take them whenever you are trying to get pregnant. Most women continue to takes them after they give birth because they help with hair and nail growth

You can take prenatal vitamins as 'regular' vitamins as long as you are of child bearing age. It truly does help prime your body for pregnancy and birth. As with any medication/supplement, it is always a good idea to consult with your doctor before starting a new regimen. Since prenatals are so expensive, I have heard of women using a 'womans multivitamin' and then supplementing with additional folic acid. But, again, Please consult your doctor before starting any new medications.
