It is not normal to have bleeding nipples when a baby is latching on properly. If you are experiencing bleeding or pain in your nipples then you need to see a lactation consultant for help on correcting your baby's latch. Make sure your baby is opening their mouth very wide and latching on to a large amount of the areola, not just the tip of the nipple.

Once you have the latch corrected you will still have to manage the bleeding and pain in your nipple until it heals. Try using lanolin nipple cream, apply it to your nipple after feeding, do not wipe it off before feeding again. In extreme cases a nipple shield might be helpful it protecting the nipple while it heals.
