I had Mirena in for almost 3 years and I didn't really have any major issues with it . It was painful to have it put in but that was just temporary . The one thing that I really didn't like about it was I became really irregular and I never new when my period was coming and I hated that . I actually switched because of that .

I have to be honest, I have heard more bad stories of any IUD, including Mirena than any other form of birth control. I once went in to get it done, because I thought I had no BC pill options, but I found out non-hormone BC pills were something I could take instead. I opted out of an IUD because of many friends having severe bleeding, cramping, pain, inability to have sex, etc. I wouldn't recommend an IUD to anyone based on experiences of my closest friends.

The following side-effects are listed for MIRENA IUD: aggression*, mood swings*, depression*, seizures, MS-like symptoms, abdominal pain*, ovarian cysts, hair loss*, greasy hair*, acne*, intrauterine pregnancy, ectopic pregnancy, sepsis, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, irregular bleeding and amenorrhea, embedment of Mirena*, perforation of Mirena, uterine fibroids, breast cancer, fever, vaginal discharge*, suicidal thoughts* and attempts etc.

April research the Paraguard IUD (copper) and Mirena (hormonal). They are both proven safe and effective. Like any other form of birth control they have certain side effects that can be associated with them, but most people experience very few if any at all. What Katie mentioned about migrating out of the uterus or perforating the uterus are quite uncommon and when it does happen it's not actually considered dangerous to you, but they would likely have to remove it by laparascopic surgery.
