Newborn babies have a primitive swimming reflex and a diving in reflex, both of which can last up to 6 months. The swimming reflex is when you place a baby face down in water, it will cause them to kick and paddle making it appear like they're swimming. The diving in reflex is a natural reflex for your baby to hold their breath when their head goes under the water and their heart rate will slow under water as well. When their reflexes kick in, they may appear like they're swimming but they really can't swim because they're unable to hold their heads up independently since they don't have the head and neck support.
