It looks like your baby is four weeks old? Personally I think it is a little too young to let him cry himself to sleep. Have you heard of the 5 S's? Swaddling, sucking, side lying, shushing, and swinging? At this age I always found my babies would only fall asleep on me.

But if I pick him up every time he cries won't he get use to that and just create more problems in the future? I just want him to be able to lay in his bassinet alone with me in the room and not have to hold him all the time.

Crying is his last way of communication. By responding to his crying you are doing exactly what you should be doing. He just spent the last 40weeks inside your body, hearing you, feeling you, etc. It is scary to suddenly be away from you and in a still and quiet bassinet. I think you have to slowly ease them into the new world.

We didnt start the CIO method until after 6 months. Babies aren't able to self soothe until at least 4 months of age. I read the The Sleep Lady: Good night sleep tight gentle methods to help baby sleep. It was a good resource for how to start the sleep process and how to prep them to be successful down the line. But at only 4 weeks babies are up a lot during the night it is normal.
