Breastfeeding to save money

I'm learning a lot being on moms.com. One thing I've come to see is that many moms are receiving some form of social assistance for themselves and their children. Being from Canada, I don't really understand all of the US options available, but I'm glad people can get the help they need to give their children a good start in life.

With that in mind, I thought I would put it out there for those of you would need assistance or may need it in the future. You may want to strongly consider breastfeeding for the first 6 months. In addition to a number of proven health benefits, it is a HUGE money saver. My friend and I had our first children 2 weeks apart. She had a condition that prevented her from breastfeeding, whereas I breastfed almost exclusively. In those first 6 months, I saved over $500, even taking into account that I was eating a little more in order to be able to make milk.

I'm not a "lactivist" who thinks you are a bad mom if you can't breastfeed - not at all...But I do think there are a lot of benefits to at least trying your best to do it, and it really works out financially too! Honestly, I found it really tough the first few weeks with all 3 kids but am really happy I managed to do it...Just something to consider.

Oh, I know lots of women aren't able to do it...Formula is a great option in those circumstances.

Breastfeeding is a great option if it works or is right for a mom... Sometimes it just does not happen to be the best way possible... but it is very cost effective!

I am thankful I've been able to breastfeed Kaitlyn. We struggled through yeast infections/thrust off and on the first 3 months, so it was very tough. She is now almost 5 months and all has been well! I hope my supply continues to keep up with her needs. It is not easy, though I'm glad I stuck it out and that my body has been able to also.

I'm a working mom of 4. My husband, kids and I live in Toronto, Canada. I love to read pretty much anything I can get my hands on, am addicted to chocolate and kissing my kids' necks (they all still let me do it!) and am a bit of a political junkie.
