Children and Phones

My daughter (10 years old) desperately wants a phone. I think there is no need for one... and another expense I do not want to incur. What is an appropriate phone age now a days?

ok... so those of you that say 10 is the right age...why? I mean who is she going to call ... me or grandma? i am just not seeing the reasoning... she doesn;t go "out" with friends or anything yet!

If you do buy her one I would buy an inexpensive one. My 14 year old daughter broke her phone and now she is saving up money doing chores and babysitting to get a new one, yes she is paying for it herself.

We gave my niece a phone at 10 so she had it in case of emergency but she's 13 now and still barely uses it, it's a prepaid phone so it's cheap too.

Until I'm in a situation and I need to get in contact with my child, he will not be getting any phone. I know I can't monitor him while he is gone away from home, but I will know where he is. Gosh I wish pay phone still existed. I say if you have no choice go ahead give it to her. I caught my niece bad mouthing someone and she blamed a friend. HMMP...I wanted to spank her 8 year old butt.

My oldest is 9, and in a couple years I might think about getting her something that is pre paid or something like that. I think she would only need it for safety, or keeping contact with home. But at her age now, she is always with an adult so I don't see the need yet.

Yeah... i am more inclined to get her one when she starts driving... before that I see no need for one ...it is only a want! And as far as mama and papa go... no to the phone think we will hit them up for a car! LOL! Just kidding!

I agree with you. Now a days though if you have an ipod touch or something like that you can text without having a phone plan. I think 10 is young for a phone. I got my first one when I started to learn to drive. But now a days it may be hard to wait that long. I would say Jr. High at least. You could get a cheap track phone with only a certain amount of minuets. I also agree a land line could be a good option if you dont have one.
