Risks and Benefits of Vacuum Extraction

Your healthcare provider should only use a vacuum to help deliver your baby if there is a medical need for one. A vacuum has risks to both mom and baby. A vacuum can cause a blood clot to form under the baby's scalp. A vacuum is generally used when a mom is unable to get her baby out on her own or if the delivery needs to be sped up due to an emergency situation. A vacuum is used over a c-section if a vaginal birth is deemed possible and safer than a c-section. If a vacuum does not work the birth will usually result in an emergency c-section.
