Best age for children to learn to read

I think it will depend on the child. We read lots to our children and have had children learn to read as early as 3-4 and as late as 8-10.

My first two were three and four. Both are book lovers and read waaaay above their grade levels. Last summer, we had a vet express doubt that our then 14 year old would understand a paper he'd written on laminitis (a condition horses can get) but B understood it just fine. :)

all kids learn at there own pace but I do feel that if you start at a young age they will love to read as they get older

That's true. My eldest daughter was very keen to read when she was 3 yrs old. Kept going to the library to borrow children's books. Other relatives handed to her their kids old reading materials. For my 2nd & last kids they were late - grades 2 to 4 both were playful.

Everyone learns at their own pace... we must also remember that letter identification and sound recognition are the building blocks of reading... so even though your child may not be able to read full sentences they are still reading when they can identify letters!

That's how my oldest daughter is, she is 14 now and loves to read. She will read 2-3 books at a time.

The BOB books are great! Jacob reads them as does Mary... they are a great learning tool! Plus they are funny... Mary giggles all the time when she gets to the page that says ... Mat sat on Sam!

I totally agree, and I think the more you read to your children early on the more likely the are to pick up reading early. But I don't think it's something you should rush, let your child set the pace they will definitely let you know when they are ready.

My twins couldn't wait to read! They had to run and get me or their Dad every time there was something to read on the game they were playing. They learned to read in kindergarten.

My daughter wants to learn to read, now that she has turned three, I've started buying books to help her. She loves her leapfrog junior.
