How Monroe came into the world :)

Okay.. finally sitting down to give you all Monroe's birth story! Whew!

Ready?

It all started (and ended) on Thursday, February 6th!

My husband woke up around 4:30am to head off to boxing.. I woke up when he did to say goodbye.. and as I waddled into the bathroom to pee.. I felt an odd trickle down my legs.. I look down and it was blood, eek! Not a lot.. but definitely something :) So I was like ought oh! I waddled to get my cell phone, called him.. and thank goodness he wasn't in class yet! He hopped in the car and turned right back around! In the meantime, I felt small cramp like contractions.. so I thought things were starting.. but never having been through it all.. wasn't sure! So I called the doctor on call.. and he agreed it was best to come in and be checked! So about 30 - 45 minutes later, we got things around and headed off to the hospital.. literally only 10 minutes away.. so lucky for that because the roads were completely snow covered from almost a blizzard the day before :)

So we get to the hospital.. go up to triage.. change.. check in.. and get checked out! Sigh.. I was only 1 cm, no water had broke.. but perhaps things were getting going :) They monitored my contractions a bit and then had us walk around the hospital for about 90 minutes to see if things would get going.. we walked and walked.. we now know that hospital super well might I say ;) And then went back up to get checked.. but nothing had happened.. urgh! The doctor knew I was in a slight bit of pain and that I really didn't want to be sent home.. so he opted to give me some nubain to relax me and see if in another 2 hours things would get going.. and they didn't :) So 2 hours later.. we were sent home, bummed!

We were at the hospital from about 7 am until 1 pm.. so we came home and decided to eat and rest.. as much as I could.. the contractions continued all afternoon.. I was able to rest and work a bit.. I think I even texted Mandi :) But when evening rolled around, things changed! About 4:30 or 5pm.. when I was timing my contractions, they got REAL! I could no longer talk or walk through them.. it was pretty intense. My water still had not broken.. so being a first time Mom.. it's hard to know if you should go back.. I knew the 511 rule.. but at 5:30 I knew things weren't changing and opted to call the on call doc again.. While crying on the phone, she thought it might be the real deal and told me to come in! So off we went again!

We arrived about 7pm.. went back up, got checked, changed.. and wa la! 3-4 cm.. and they were keeping me! :) Yahoo! Do you know how good that feels when they won't send you home? :)

My contractions were INTENSE.. very painful.. and I opted for an epi as soon as they would allow.. I waddled down to my room with them all.. they got us settled in our room and said the CRN would be in to get things going.. note my nurses were AMAZING! And two of them were named Megan.. ha!

I received my epi about 8:30 - 9pm.. and it worked fast! They then told me to rest and sleep.. so I was ecstatic because I had been up all day and barely had slept.. ie.. I was spent. Here I thought I could snooze a few hours and nothing would happen until early morning the next day.. well.. like usual.. things don't go as planned :)

About 45 minutes later, someone's heart rate dipped, so they came in to check me.. well I had gone from about 5 cm to +1 - +2 in that quick time.. they said I was ready - eek! They said they wanted me to labor down for an hour and then the doc would deliver a babe next door, then come on over.. my husband and I couldn't believe it was going SO fast.. but we were so excited! About 10 pm I began to labor down and to be honest.. I felt amazing! My husband joked I was just jibber jabbering like usual - while he was getting nervous :)

About 11pm my nurse came in to get me pushing and to see how fast it might happen.. I pushed for about 15 minutes with her.. very casual and relaxed.. even just chatting.. once again, she was great! And as I asked her how long she helps me push until the doc comes.. she said she saw HAIR! We were ecstatic.. and thinking it would be dark, like mine.. but when we asked.. she said BLONDE! Ha! We were even more excited!

The doc was called in.. and everyone was getting ready.. the nurse that helped told the doc I was a good pusher.. so the doc told me to push ONCE to see how good.. well I pushed ONCE.. and someone flew 3/4th the way out! Literally.. flew out.. we heard gasps in the room, she basically caught Monroe and with one teeny push he was out! They placed him on me.. my husband cut the cord.. and we fell fast in love with the peanut :)

Sorry that was sooooo long ladies. but that's how Monroe came to be :)

Awww....that's a wonderful story and I even teared up. Part of your story reminded me of my first birth. We walked and walked and walked.....and nothing got going. So very happy it was such a great experience! One push for your first, wow! You are an amazing pusher! I pushed for nearly an hour with my first....she was probably four pounds heavier than Monroe though! ;)
