The changing face of parenthood after age 10

My oldest will be turning 10 this summer, and I am already starting to see many of the changes in behaviour that all the parenting books and friends with older children warned you about. One of my friends said: "It's like a flip gets switched when they turn 10". Have you seen this happen to your children or other kids you know? I recently came across this article, and found that quite a few of the points really were starting to apply to my son (not the parts about puberty yet, thank God, I don't think I can handle that yet!!)

Yes, Brande, that is a good way to describe it! My son really wants more independence and freedom and is so proud of himself when I give it to him! But, by the way, I hear girls are hitting this milestone - and puberty! - much earlier. So prepare yourself; you may not have as much time as you think :-)

I kind of think it was the 12 year mark that we notice the biggest change for some reason. But hey, it's probably different for every child.

I think that you totally need to re adjust the parenting accordingly.. Different punishments, different words when taking things away.. different expectations.. and then the biggest thing I've found with 9 1/2 year old.. is to respect him.. He's totally going through some changes and I have ti respect his sudden request to bath with the door closed and dressing alone with the door locked.. as much as I want to be like, "Why? NO one's looking..".. Doesn't matter.. he's aware of himself and I have to give him that respect and let him sort of guide me through it..

I'm a working mom of 4. My husband, kids and I live in Toronto, Canada. I love to read pretty much anything I can get my hands on, am addicted to chocolate and kissing my kids' necks (they all still let me do it!) and am a bit of a political junkie.
