Traveling long distances with little ones

How do you handle traveling long distances with little ones?

Do you tend to drive more when they sleep? Do you use a car dvd player or some other electronic device? Take stops more often?

We drive to and from Montana to California at least once a year. I hate the drive but my kids are pretty good about it.

We leave at bed time because the kids will spend more of the time sleeping if we do it this way. It is harder on us sleep wise but easier because we don't hear as much whining from the older kids and we don't hear as much crying from the baby.

We tried using the iPad or DVD player but it just made my son carsick and a kid vomiting in the back seat is no fun!

I make each kid a special bag with special snacks, candy, a new toy, and some crayons and a coloring book. They are pretty good about being in the car. We also have some kid music that we play for part of the drive.

We do make frequent potty breaks and we let them out to stretch their legs and walk around a bit.

Katie, I do something similar. We leave early in the morning and almost always the kids will go back to sleep. When they were little it was the best way to travel with them. Now they usually take their Nintendo DS and some snacks if we don't leave too early.

The carsick thing reminds me. Mini's boyfriend went with us to Williamsburg last weekend. On the way there he mentioned that sometimes he gets car sick. I had a few moments of panic and said "How are you feeling?" which he answered he was fine.

Still, I just couldn't imagine how I would handle that since I had nothing in the car to use for a sick bucket. Oy.

We have a ton of vomit bags in our car, Each child has one they can reach and we have plenty of extras.

Michelle does great. We have been on several 4 or more hour drives in the last 3 months. Of course she has "road dog" in her blood. We have many years of these trips ahead so hopefully she continues to love it as much as her father and I do. We do use a DVD player w/ Disney movies going and I sit in the back with her with lots of toys to keep her entertained. Depending on time constraints she usually drinks formula as breastfeeding takes longer so we don't have to stop as much or for as long.
