Giving a speech

I am throwing my sister a surprise 50th birthday party in May, and I am going to give a speech for the first time in her honor! I am so excited, but I've never given a speech. Do you moms have any speech tips for me?

    Oh that's so exciting!

Know your audience. Will they appreciate humor, sentimental words or maybe a mix of the two?

Don't go on and on about the same things, you will lose your audience.

Have fun! If you are nervous other people will be less inclined to stay tuned in. If you feel comfortable and relaxed (or even if you don't, fake it!) then other people will stay tuned in.

Don't drink too much before your speech, haha. That's never a good idea.

That is very sweet of you! I have no suggestions, I have never given a speech like that before and I don't know if I ever will. I would be very scared. Please share with us what you come up with and let us know how it goes! I am excited and nervous for you.

keep it sincere... and if you feel nervous, know you seem much calmer than you are. Make eye contact with people in the audience. Pause for effect. Keep your speech slow and deliberate. Hope this helps!

Be confident and prepare! If you get nervus easily it would also be a good thing to practice in front of someone or the mirror!

When I give a set, planned speech, I like to really focus on the delivery and rhythm of the words to make it sound natural. I tend to stutter and stumble when I'm nervous, but if I've focused on not just the words, but how to make them sound their best, I find the speech flows a lot more easily for me, like singing a song. Hope that helps!
