So you get a call from the school nurse telling you to come pick up your child. They suspect fifth disease. Oh my goodness , you panic! What is wrong with your child?! Actually fifth disease is very common , especially in ages 5 to 15. It is a viral disease characterized by reddened cheeks then rash traveling to the trunk ,arms and legs. The child could have a low grade temp, headache and feel like they just have a cold. It generally goes away very quickly and without problems. As with any illness, there are always exceptions to the rule and symptoms could be worse. There generally is no treatment required.
