Reason for hand flapping in children with autism

It is called stimming mostly all children with autism do this it helps them calm down if they are nervous or even sometimes out of a habit.....

A lot of people do stimming almost everyday like it you bit your nails or play with your hair or tap a pencil/pen over and over so really it is not just children with autism

when our son used to do that we would just hold his hands and sit with him and try to talk with him about hitting himself and we gave him his own little pillow to hit when he was mad always something soft it worked for us now when he gets mad he screams

our doctor recommended behavioral therapists who no longer work with my son, but they used to do redirection which doesn't always work, so my doc says as long as no one gets hurt just ignore him that it's actually his way of coping
