video games have their role but what about the violence?

    Great discussion to start Rayna!!

I agree with what the article says - all children are going to be exposed to violence in some form at some point. While I don't think parents should shelter their children, I also don't think we need to expose them to it unnecessarily. There are plenty of video games out there that are either completely non-violent, or have little to no violence against humans. For example, we let Mason play Minecraft on the xbox in creative mode. His character can't die or even be injured, and there are no "bad guys" unless he creates them. He usually spends his time building houses or other things - we love it because it's a great creative outlet for him and he truly enjoys building things in the game.

I think people would love to turn to just video games and blame them for a lot of society's issues. But it's not the video games, it's the parenting. Through either lack of understanding the video games or not caring to review games before they are played it all comes down to the parents.

There have been studies done that suggest that the violence isn't the issue so much as the constant instant gratification found in video games (violent ones included) that discourages certain brain functioning from developing. The way it was explained to be is if your synapses learn they don't have to be very long to get information from point A to point B, they have no incentive to lengthen and allow for higher complex thought processes that require longer stretches of concentration.

      I thought it was interesting.

Thanks for sharing! I remember one time I saw this study on TV where there were these kids playing in this test area with scientists watching behind the glass. First they had kids playing without any violent toys (swords, guns etc) and they were playing peacefully and then they showed the same kids playing once violent toys had been added and it's stayed with me. Those kids went nuts hurting each other and stuff. Turned me off violent toys and games for kids.
