Advanced Maternal Age

If you are having a baby and you are 35 years or older your doctor will consider you "Advanced Maternal Age (AMA)". When you are AMA your risks of having a baby with birth defects are increased. The older you get, the greater your risks. Your doctor will be able to explain the exact risk factors that apply to you personally. Most of the time women of AMA after offered additional testing to check the baby for abnormalities.

Overall many women of Advanced Maternal Age go on to have healthy babies.

Yes, my doctor did this to me, but was nothing to my midwife for me to be having my eighth at age 40. I've had three children over age 35 and I've had most of my miscarriages as well. Only two miscarriages were before I was 35.
