Breastmilk for adopted baby

It is possible to breastfeed an adopted baby but it takes a lot of work and patience. If you are considering inducing lactation so you can breastfeed an adopted baby I strongly encourage you to meet with a certified lactation consultant as soon as possible. The lactation consultant with be your greatest resource and help you come up with an action plan.

If you are not able to lactate enough for your adopted baby or in time for your adopted baby to arrive you can supplement with formula or even donated breastmilk.

The supplement can be feed to your baby via a SNS (supplemental nursing system) while the baby breastfeeds. This allows the baby to suckle from the breast and stimulate your body to product milk while still allowing the baby to get the nutrition that it needs to grow.

Some birth mothers are even willing to pump milk for the baby and send it to the adoptive parents to feed to the baby.

Just know that whatever you chose, there is no right or wrong. As long as you are feeding your baby and loving your baby you are doing everything right.

I had a friend try her hardest to nurse one of her adopted children but it never worked for her. I admired her for trying.

Medications can help in some cases. There are multiple factors, such as if the mom has ever had a baby before.

I am adopting a baby girl due in the next few weeks and have been pumping to induce lactation. So far I get a few drops, but not enough to feed her on. I will be using a sns until I can bring in a larger supply. I have not taken any additional medication, but I have been considering taking fenugreek an herb used to increase milk production.
