Nursing and drinking

It is my strong belief that if you plan on drinking, you should pump ahead of time and store your milk for your baby. No amount of alcohol in your milk is safe. Thank being said, after a certain amount of time, and based on how much you have had to drink, the alcohol is no longer in your system and it will be safe to resume nursing. When I was nursing I still pumped and dumped a full 24 hours after I had a drink.

La Leche Leage has a very informative article about this very topic. It can be found at http://www.lalecheleague.org/faq/alcohol.html

Thanks for sharing. I've tried to have a glass of wine every once in awhile, though it just does not taste good to me. The same has been true with beer - which I use to love. I don't have the taste for it. I take it as my body's way of telling me it is not good for me right now. Have to see if I acquire the taste when I'm done breastfeeding.

Our lactation consultant in the hospital said that as long as you don't nurse withing a few hours of drinking it's okay. She said that one drink is metabolized very quickly and as long as you haven't felt buzzed for at least an hour it wouldn't harm the baby. She also said that our bodies work hard to filter all of the bad stuff out when creating breast milk.

I would always wait until after Avery was asleep for the night. That way I knew I had at least 8-10hrs to get it out of my system. Not that I drink that often anyway.

I personally don't drink to excess while nursing, but I have been known to have a glass of wine or a cocktail. I usually try to time it - nursing just before I drink and then I drink my drink and have another hour or two before the baby wants to nurse again. I don't pump and dump though, seems like such a waste!
