Sick baby’s parents defend sailing trip with kids
In March a family was rescued by the coast guard when they're 1yr old fell ill on their extended sailing journey. People are outraged, saying that they should've never had their young children (1yr old and 3 yr old) living on the sailboat in open water for such a long period of time.
I personally think that's ridiculous. The parents were very experienced sailors and it was very regular for their family to live at sea for months at a time. They took every precaution they knew of to keep their kids safe. The baby had contracted salmonella before they left but had recovered and doctors gave both girls clearance to travel.
When the baby got sick and wasn't responding to medications they headed for shore, but their boat malfunctioned and started taking on water. They called the coast guard and while the boat was lost the whole family made it home safely.
It sounds to me like they were very responsible and asked for help when they needed it. I don't see the problem.
What do you all think? Would you take your kids sailing like they did if you were an expert sailor?
