Car Seats after an accident

Some lesser known facts for you... hopefully nobody will ever need to use them, but these are good to keep in mind!
- Car Seats should be replaced after ANY accident. They are designed to keep your child safe once and only once. Any accident can cause cracks or hairline fractures in the seat and will then compromise the safety. Insurance companies often cover the cost of new seats, so be sure to call and let them know you need to replace!
- If you're in a more serious accident, try to leave you baby in their seat (unless it is dangerous to do so), as it can help immobilize their head and neck. Let paramedics remove your child from their car seat if you are able to.

That's exactly why I posted it. I think it's all of our natural reactions to get our babies out and comfort them, but it can cause more damage to them. Instead, if you are able, try to comfort them while they are still in the seat, talking to them and touching them without actually unbuckling or removing them from the seat

You can also take them to your local fire department to be destroyed. I am paranoid (and live in a neighborhood with trash hunters) about people pulling a seat out of the trash and just replacing the straps - they can usually be purchased from the manufacturer.

Wow Beth thank you! When we were shopping for car seats we opted for the super dooper reinforced metal something or other.. knowing that we could crash on the way home and do it all over again. Never an issue, the cost of a seat is insignificant to my kids life.

One side note... I know that most moms wouldn't do it.. but on one of the facebook yard sales I'm on, a woman bought a car seat used and found a big crack in it under the cover when she went to wash it. The seller swore that it had never been in an accident...

Please please PLEASE buy your car seats new.
