Average age for learning to read

This can vary a bit from child to child. Some start sounding out words when they are four, and others don't really catch on until they are closer to six. This is all average of course, anything before or after could be perfectly normal and not point to anything worthy of worry.

If you have concerns or the child's teacher has concerns definitely mention it to the pediatrician.

    It totally varies.. My son was an early reader and he's in 4th grade now and was tested at reading at a 12th grade level. but my daughter isn't nearly where he was at 7... she just doesn't grasp it as quickly.. she's right where she's supposed to be for her age group.. so she's okay there.. but My son just got it really fast...
