My son Patrick

My son is a good boy but has developed a bad habit of cursing. Any suggestions of how to get him to stop?

That's a really great point as well - try to find out why he is using those words. I would bet it's a combination of trying to seem cool for his friends, and trying to get a rise out of you so he gets some attention (even negative attention is attention right?!). Take some time and explain that it's not "cool" to use words like that even if his friends are doing it - and make sure that the only attention you give him when he is using that language is a reminder that it's not OK

I would make it abundantly clear that it is not appropriate in your house for him to use language like that. With Mason (this is much smaller scale, but the same general idea should work for Patrick), he went through a stage where he thought it was funny to talk about poop, pee, his penis, and other things along those lines... I told him that the only place it was appropriate to talk about those things was in the bathroom. Each time he talked about them other places, I would tell him he either needed to go into the bathroom until he was done speaking like that, or he needed to apologize to the people around him for rude behavior. I won't lie... we spent a few days just hanging out near the bathroom while Mason went in and talked about poop and laughed his little head off. But he quickly realized that we weren't going to entertain it and we weren't going to give him attention that it wasn't as fun as he thought and now he doesn't talk like that anymore.

I would set a boundary - maybe his room - and tell Patrick that he's welcome to talk however he'd like when he is in that space. But that when he's out of that space he needs to choose his words carefully.

Is he hearing it from you or your husband or from friends at school? Is he just mimicking what he's hearing others say?
