Was the time out to late

So as i was getting vince ready to go so we can get haiden and a kid i babysit for from school logan was in living room. I left my soda on the floor. As soon as i cam out of vinces room, logan took off fast and hid himself. I look at him and my soda bottle, which had its cap off and i know i had the cap on. So he took a drink. Knowing i had no time to put him in timeout i told him as soon as we get back he was in timeout.

We go and get the kids. We get home. I carry him in the house and put him on the bottom of my basement stairs. Before i walked up i told him he was down there for drinking my soda without permisson. I walked up and closed the door.
Once his time was up i went and got him. I again told him why i put him there, and had him say sorry. I hugged him and that was it.

At that age, I think it would really depend on the kid. I know my daughter would have completely forgotten about the soda by the time we got back to the house. In situations like the one you were in, I probably would've done the time out before leaving, even if it meant time out only lasted 2 seconds instead of whatever your normal time period is.

BUT I also think explaining why he was on time out was the right thing to do, I just worry that even with the reminder he may not have known what you were talking about.
