I am also overweight. I don't need to tell you that being overweight causes problems in every area of our lives. Being overweight and pregnant caused me to have a lot more doctors visits than the standard. I also developed gestational diabetes (which is not necessarily a weight thing) during pregnancy and had to see a dietitian every week. You get into a really bad circle because the doc wants you to exercise but with the added weight it's a lot harder. I got my diet on track as soon as I found out I was pregnant and only gained 9 lbs throughout my entire pregnancy. Of course there are plenty of overweight women who have babies but it is so much easier if you take care of things before you conceive. Another good thing about a healthy routine early on is that you don't have to struggle so much when you really have to get healthy. Good luck!
Loosing weight will help your chances of conceiving, there are risks for you and your baby if you are pregnant and significantly overweight, especially if this is your first baby. You are more likely to develop a condition called preeclampsia, which is risky for both of you. You also have a greater chance of developing gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, blood clots, and you are more likely to have trouble with labor and delivery including severe bleeding afterwards. Talk with your OB.
