PKU Test

So did anyone know that when they do the PKU, there is a such thing as getting too much blood and them having to re-do the test? It sounds weird to me, but I had to get Develen retested today because they said they collected too much blood in the first test so it came back abnormal.

Yes, they can get too much blood on a PKU test. For the PKU test they put blood on a piece or special paper, the blood drops go into circles. For the test to be accurate the blood needs to be in the circles, too little blood or too much blood will cause an abnormal result and need to be retested.

When they redid the test today, they just completely covered the circles and it was even all around the circles... I hope they don't have to do it another time

The sheet I have seen from the manufacturer for the test cards says to fill the circles completely but do not get blood outside of the circles.

It was pretty frustrating. He doesn't bleed well, so they had to prick the heel of his foot twice for the first test, and three times for the second test, and I had to just deal with him screaming the entire time. I wish they would just get it right the first time. I don't mind letting him get tested for things, it's important, but I also don't want him to have to go through it over and over again for no reason.

He's fine now. It's just while they are doing it that he gets so upset, and it takes a while because he struggles. I had to hold his other leg down for them at one point. :/

I don't think we ever had to have ours redone per say, that I remember.
