Floating swimsuits for toddler: helpful or harmful?

We haven't used a floating swimsuit but we've used the floatation vests, they were not life jackets, but actual vests with floaties inside. We found them useful in helping our children learn to swim and feel comfortable in the water. I haven't heard anything negative about them and it's been a few years since we've used them, as our older boys wore th em out!

We use puddle jumpers - which seems similar to what you are talking about. We were good friends with someone that is a lifeguard at a beach and he told us not to use them there, because the floatation vests can help kids get pulled out by the undertow MUCH MUCH faster. So we only use them at the pool and hold the kids' hands the entire time when we go to the beach.

What are puddle jumpers? I am going to go research...

We never used them at the beach. There's not really any clean fresh water to swim in around here. Just at the pool at hotels and the Y.
