Good pets for kids?

When my kiddos are a bit older (including the one I still have to conceive lol) what would be a good pet? I mean I'm 95% sure it'll be a dog haha. But any specific type best for kids? Any other pets really good? FYI, I'm allergic to cats haha. :)

I had one, years ago. They are so sweet. I want more, and more pigs (had those, too, they are also sweet but super messy), and I want to get a Sicilian donkey because they are gentle natured and are loyal to their owners, plus make great pets for kids (I researched them). Sorry, you had me all excited about farm animals again. Lol

I think any pets are great if you have room or stamina for them! LOL! The only pet I say be careful with would be reptiles. They can be great pets if cared for and handled properly!

I believe that any small creature can be good, such as a goldfish, or a kitty, the thing about these animals is that it can teach them that all animals as pets need care, as you teach them that you need to change the water for the fish, and keep the kitty litter fresh you will show them that there is more to having a pet than just playing with them and that they are living creatures and take lots of love and commitment. (plus these animals take minimal work to care for, vet bills for a cat are far cheaper than that of a dog!) Dogs are fun, the idea of having your dog running and jumping with the kids is more like fantasy, once the newness wears off and you realize that you are doing all the walking, watering, and picking up poop because they have soccer practice, or a sleepover the go to, the doggie doesn't seam like such a good idea after all, there are plenty of good choices of pets so be wise don't make a hasty decision that you'll regret 5 months from now, think long term.

They have hairless kitties. Lol They look like gremlins though. and aren't as cute and cuddly.
Labs and Golden Retrievers are large breeds that are excellent with kids and a family. My sisters Lab would get on the floor and crawl along with my nephew; it was too cute. We have a mini Dachshund and he is excellent with children, plus my aunts and grandparents had Dachshunds as well as Cocker Spaniels, and they are excellent breeds that are great with kids.
Aside from dogs, we had rabbits (and cats, of course) growing up. We also had hamsters but not until we are older.
I had a reptile, it was some time of lizard. It bit my 5 year old nephew. He kept sticking his finger in front of his mouth and it bit him. I kept telling him to stop and do not do that, but he would listen. I believe reptiles are for older kids. He will be 18 soon and collects them now, oddly enough.
I do think turtles would make great pets, especially box ones.
Fish would be great as well; my son likes to watch them in the pediatrician's office--but they are boring to me.

Yeah, I didn't want to say it, but they are rather ugly (hairless cats). It would be way too weird petting it...like a newborn rat, ew.

I think starting off small is better if you want the kids being responsible for. A fish or something a little bigger would be a Guinea Pig. We have 3 & they make the cutest noises & might nibble but don't usually bite like hamsters do. If you're looking to be the main caregiver the either a hairless cat or a dog. Small dogs that are great with kids are Yorkies or Papillons. Bulldogs are okay but French Bulldogs are better for kids & are a bit more durable but beware cause any bulldog breed are known for having skin issues & breathing problems. Larger breeds that are good are Labs & Golden's but if you go toward a lab keep in mind that they can be very hyper. The English Lab tends to be a bit more mellow. Whichever you choose just be sure to do you're research!
Also if you're looking for breeds that don't shed those would be terriers, poodles & the mixed breeds such as Lab/poodle or golden/poodle.
          Good luck!
