The Supernatural

In my filippino culture, telling stories about how the dead came back to visit, ghosts, mythical filippino creatures were just a few of the popular subjects to talk about when I was younger. Most of the stories were too young for my ears because I had trouble sleeping at night remembering the stories that were told earlier that evening.

Moms, how would you educate your kids on these topics, or would you not say anything at all until they approach you with it?

Hmm I'm not sure. I think I'm a ways off from having to deal with this yet but I think it depends on the kid. I remember my mom dating a guy who had 3 kids while I was 18 and his son was around 5 I think and we took a ride on the bermuda triangle at Sea World at the Gold Coast in Australia. He was fascinated with the bermuda triangle for weeks after that. I would find him books and tell him stories about it.
So if a kid has an interest in it I think it's ok as long as you try to keep it from sounding too scary.

I grew up with 2 older brothers. So every time our family had movie night, I was forced to watch something terrifying (I STILL can't sleep on my back because of a certain razor-blade fingered man).

My parent's were not good at making me feel better about this kind of thing. Mom would often tell me stories about a cloaked figure that seemed to follow me throughout my life (I've seen it twice).

I was 6 when I was watching Hellraiser, Nightmare on Elm Street, the Jason movies.. it wasn't okay. I'm hoping to keep Charlie away from these kinds of things for a while. But I know that I can't shield him forever. As far as fictional scary things, I will probably relate things to Halloween, as in hey look they're playing dress up. The more "real" stuff.. I don't know. I want to be the one to teach him about these things, I don't want people filling his head with nonsense so... great post MaryJanelol.. I've got some thinking to do!!
