Münchausen Disease.. by Proxy...

I think my good friends sister in law has this.. I swear.. Her kids are sick ALL the time.. and they seem to have been in the ER for one thing to another.. mild or not.. about 6 times this year alone!!!

Munchausen is when a parent is doing something to make their child sick.. all the time.. so that they receive attention .. the parent receives attention for having a sick child.. There have been many cases about it.. One most recently about a mom that apparently poisoned her son with sodium through a feeding tube without any medical reason.. This is extreme... as is that movie.. The Sixth Sense? Did you see it? When the mom is discovered to be poisoning her kids and keeping them sick so that she can get attention..

it's sick. and it's very real.. and I swear.. she's got some form of it.. she's very dramatic.. canceled her daughters Birthday party this past weekend because of some stomach virus.. which her son threw up ONCE .. in the pool.. no one was sick.. It's exhausting and sad.. YET.. I see the grandparents racing to help her and show up for her and take care of her home and her other child..

Anyone seen this?

It is.. But remember the kids (dead people) that are contacting him.. are trying to show him something and then the end.. they lead him to a video tape and it's played at the funeral and they taped their mom poisoning their food? and then everyone at the party realizes she did it?

That's why he saw dead people.. and Brice willis was dead and didn't know it but was showing him to these little kids..

I've never seen or heard of it, but it isn't something that completely shocks me beyond belief. People love attention - to some degree we all do - and having a child in the hospital or just sick in general does get you attention. It's heartbreaking to hear that though.

I love crime shows so I've seen probably too much about this...it's so sad. Those poor kids. I have a friend who I finally had to delete off Facebook because I'm pretty sure she has some form of this. Her baby was always in the ER. The last time was because she had a rash that turned out to be eczema but she made them do all kinds of horrific tests to her 3 month old.

This is a very sensitive topic for me and very hard to talk about.

This diagnosis is not even legal recognized. Just about anyone with a sick child fits into the "symptoms" of this diagnosis. It is so subjective and extremely hard to prove for a fact.

As the mom of a child with a very rare medical condition I was accused of munchausen by proxy. The doctor claimed that they have to consider it anytime they have a rare and hard to diagnose medical condition in a small child. We went through an excruciating 9 month long investigation to rule out munchausen by proxy. It is terrifying what they put you through. The things that they said could be "symptoms" in our case were ridiculous; breastfeeding, natural remedies, basically anything we did that was slightly different was suspect, including cloth diapers, my experience in healthcare was even a "symptom".

The recent stories that came out scare me even more. My daughter has a feeding tube and she is frequently hospitalized due to episodes cause by her illness. Due to her illness she frequently has problems with her electrolytes and sodium. Many children with feeding tubes have problems with their electrolytes and sodium. It is scary that one parent might have abused their child and now the rest of us are suspect. I think those stories in the media are lacking way too much information and sensationalized. I looked up some of the details and the articles are not even truthful. What they are saying is very harmful to all parents of a child with a feeding tube.

Munchausen by proxy diagnosis needs to stop being used. Instead they need to use an accurate and provable diagnosis such as smothering, poisoning, starvation, etc.

No one should judge another family or suspect them of wrong doing because their kids are frequently sick. If something else is going on then maybe your concerns are justified, but not just because they frequently get sick. We all go through tough times in our life and it is really hard to have so many things go wrong at once. Care and compassion go a long way.

I agree that when something actually happens to the child, we call it what it is.. starvation, etc.. This sister in law.. something isn't right.. I'm not saying she is this.. I'm just wondering out loud and occurred to me after the news article.. Her kids are NOT sick.. they are never diagnosed WITH a sickness.. they are "normal" kids with runny noses and coughs, she freaks out and runs them to the doctor or Er.. and then is sent home without medicine and to keep watch..

I'm sorry that you had to go through that.. Thats must be devastating.. and certainly if your child has a diagnosis and consistent Doctor treating her then I can't imagine why they would think this.. on you..

And no one has approached her or brought it up.. If you could see this kids and see her around them, it's clear that it's her issue.. she's a mess and frantic and concerned and hovers.. Something isn't right..

Many parents who's child has a diagnosis and a doctor treating them are still accused or investigated it is sad. I hate this term all together because of that.

Have you talked to other family members about your SIL? Maybe she needs some help or has some underlying depression or anxiety. Depression and anxiety can cause what you are describing.

It's actually not MY sister in law.. it's my good friends sister in law.. and yes.. we actually just seriously talked together about it yesterday which is why I posted about it.. to get an idea of real and un real experiences.. The whole family which I'm close with kind of roll their eyes and call her crazy in a funny way.. but never to her face.. yet everyone runs to her the second she freaks out about something..

My friend has brought it up to her parents and her husband.. and they just think she's a nervous nelly... But the extreme is the trips to the ER.. Not sure if something has come up with the ER docs.. I'ma summing something will, like you said.. they eventually raise a red flag right?

Never occurred to me that someone whose child has an actual diagnosis.. or sickness would be investigated.. how awful for you and your family..

But I'm glad you shed some light on the other side..

Munchausen by proxy is someone who actually does something to the kids to make them sick. It sounds like the lady you are talking about just over reacts and thinks they are sick and takes them to the ER? That isn't munchausen by proxy, if that is what she is doing. Even pretending they are sick then they aren't isn't munchausen by proxy, they actually have to do something to the child to make symptoms appear or make them sick. Does that make sense? It is complicated.

Parents of kids with real problems are accused on a regular basis. I have personally met many families and heard many horror stories since we went through our ordeal 6yrs ago. We had a lawyer take our case probono because he was so disturbed about what was happening to us. Our lawyer was able to find over 100 cases similar to ours that had no medical proof of abuse and did have medical proof of a real documented illness.
