Your baby pooped blood: possible reasons

If you baby has blood in their stool is might be pretty scary. The first thing you need to do is stay calm and note the amount of blood and the color.

Constipation can cause bright red blood in the stool. The blood will usually be on the outside of the poop and it is caused by little tears in the rectum from the large stool coming out.

Large amounts of bright red blood in the stool often indicate a bacteria infection and your baby needs to see a doctor right away.

Mucousy blood in the stool can indicate a food allergy such as an allergy to dairy protein.

Black blood that looks similar to coffee grounds is a sign of bleeding in the upper GI tract. It could also be caused by bleeding from the mom's nipples.

Any bleeding large or small should be reported to your doctor. Large amounts should be reported right away. Many causes of bleeding are pretty easy to fix and not a big deal.
