TV & BABIES!?

Hmm.. a debate!

I have so many friends who plop their bambino down in front of the TV.. either for awhile during the day.. during dinner time.. during something. I also have friends who have nixed the TV being within eye sight of the baby.. feeling as though they will get enough of it when older.. why start it all now and rely on it? Obviously I have yet to bring my bambino home.. but this is a hot topic and one I would LOVE for Moms to weigh in on!

Did/Do you rely on the TV from time to time for a break?

Do you think it's unnecessary and you can entertain them other ways?

Meg... I thought I was going to read for hours and teach my kids sign language... lol.. LOL.. at me... Here;s the dealio... The real one... TV is okay in short bits.. Baby Einstein was perfect because it was 25 minutes and that was just about the amount of time both of my kids were willing to sit still anyway... As they got a little older... I put Dora on or whatever child show caught their attention.

There will be times, when you NEED so desperately to out that baby down and either do a load of wash, talk on the phone or just sit next to them without someone grabbing at you...

Parents that use television as a sitter... again.. it's relative... Hours? No way... and my kids won't sit for hours no matter what is on... BUT, allow yourself to play with the idea and choose your video's wisely so they're not dumbing it down with sponge bob...

I had two times in the day when I used the Baby Einstein video... the morning after the feeding's and play.. to get things picked up from the morning time AND the afternoon when I was trying to get dinner done and settle in... it's tough.. Also, I would let both of my kids watch 30 minutes after their night time bath... a time where we would sit together and watch and play blocks while they watched... I loved that time... They calmed down and if you do it every day, they come to understand the routine and fall into it easily.

My kids STILL have the same routine... After bath, they get 30 minutes of tv and a snack and they know it's bedtime soon... Ihave never changed it...

I think parents get wrapped up in it all... that TV is bad.. Bad parenting... But i think it's just not that way.. It's how you use it... There are a BUNCH of cute and educational DVD's out there... Can't say enough about baby einstein's.... ALL my kids loved it and it wasn't excrutiating for me either...

Yo Gabba Gabba will make you want to punch yourself in the face.

Once again.. love your honesty.. you paint a great picture Jessica :) I think I would be a lot like you.. for needed times to reset, rest or catch up.. something educational sounds perfectly natural and fine.. also the bedtime routine, I LOVE THAT! Just a way to wind down essentially, isn't it? And your kiddos will always remember it!

Oh.. and the Yo Gabba Gabba? My friends all have kids and OMG....INSANE.

The summer was like that... and I would suddenly feel myself annoyed and realize that the TV was on and they weren't even watching it!!!! I was so annoyed... plus the same freakin sounds and songs and Dora's voice and repetition... and then there's the Big Time Rush sound effects... Ughhhhhh... I wanted to hurt everyone...

I was afraid of the quiet at first... lol... like they weren't entertained... then I was listening to my daughter talk with her animals and play in her head and my son giggling over some mine craft video... was nice... for a while of course..

Don't YOU go insane though?? Those kids shows and the same ones over and over over and over...??

My kids are old enough now to turn on the tv and find a channel or put a movie in, etc. They turn it on right when they wake up in the morning and ask first any other time they go to it.. Usually it's afternoon when they are winding down from the day...

My BIGGEST PET PEEVE is when it's on and they are NOT watching it... Mandi - I don't know how you don't go insane... I hate seeing them with the TV on and they're over playing legos or reading, coloring, playing on the iphone or kindle... My thing is if you want to watch something then WATCH it.. TV is to watch... but if you got other things to do, then do those. I like quiet.. I like not having that noise in the background.. SOmeimes I don't even catch on.. Ill be going around doing stuff and then speaking over something and I am brought quick into the moment and go.. wait, wait... tv off...
MY kids are pretty good about it... I like the sounds of just our home of them doing things in it... I love listening to my little girl talk with her world she creates with her dolls, or stuffed animals, etc... and I think that quiet is necessary...

My children have never been TV babies... but during their toddler years I did introduce them to the TV. I must admit I tried Baby Einstein videos on my first and to tell you the truth she liked looking at the ceiling fan just about as much as looking at the videos, go figure! I believe there is nothing wrong with television as long as it is in moderation... it is overuse and abuse of the television that can cause harm to a child... a TV is NOT a babysitter!
