Swollen Montgomery Glands

..I got this weird bump on my areola that has become swollen since I had the baby in February... I decided to brave the search results and started googling.. Apparently it's a swollen Montgomery gland.. Treatment? Hot compress before nursing to open glands up and help it pop... If that doesn't work, lance it... Well..it said go to the doctor to lance it but personally I would rather lance it at home and cry in my own bathroom than be bawling my eyes out in a cold exam room (been there, done that. It's no fun).... so if any other breastfeeding mom has a swollen, painful bump on her areola don't freak out too much. :) So.. here goes trying to get this thing to pop and stay away.

It is normal for Montgomery gland to get bigger during pregnancy and after birth. How did is it? Is it painful? Have you tried to squeeze it?

It's about pea size. Only painful when touched lol. I have tried squeezing it, poking it with a sterilized needle. I get some out but not enough to relieve pressure. I put a hot compress on it earlier and it seemed to help but not much. Somebody else reccommended oregano essential oil... so we might go that route. Cheaper than a doctor visit. The local doesn't know anything about them (she is just a PA with not much experience with breastfeeding moms) and the midwife can't see me for two months.

Are you sure it is in the skin and not in the breast?

Yes. According to the instructions I found I poked it wrong.. Supposed to poke in from the bottom instead the outer like you would a cyst, otherwise you push the infection down deeper.

Be very careful doing anything on your own, you don't want to get mastitis or any other breast infection. Is there a lactation consultant in your area you could see for help?

I will have to see if one is available tomorrow while we are in the city.

I just realized something.. I had one on my other breast before she came, but I was able to drain that one.
