Baby backpack for hiking, what to look for?

There are a ton of these types of carriers! I had one for my oldest that was the metal frame type, similar to the one I have pictured here. The thing is, you need to make sure that you follow the weight and height restrictions on the carriers. A baby that is too young to straighten themselves out may find themselves in very uncomfortable positions, or dangerous ones if they can't breathe properly.

I think my Ergo would work for hiking so I'd just use that.
I do back carry with soft structured carriers (like the Ergo), but you can't back carry a baby under a few months old anyway... I also have a Kelty hiking carrier like the phone you posted here... it's AMAZING for long hikes/camping. It has lots of storage and pockets for other things and the kickstand type thing makes it a chair for your child when you stop for a break.
I too only used an Ergo when hiking... but my sister used a Kelty and it too worked great! I saw no need to buy a secondary backpack for hiking since my Ergo was so versitile!
