Babies physical development: can I encourage my 1-month-old to stand?

Newborn babies have a number of primitive reflexes that they are born with. One of these reflexes is called the Step Reflex. If you stand your newborn baby on a flat surface they will actually stand up, try to hold their weight and start taking steps. It is normal for your baby to do this. Trying out this reflex is not going to hurt your baby. This reflex will often fade away after a few weeks or months along with the other newborn reflexes. This is not a sign that your baby is ready to stand unassisted or walk.
