How to stop thumb sucking....

My 7 year old is still sucking his thumb. We have tried about everything to get him to stop. He is so smart with what we are trying to do. The dentist said to let him stop on his own, but I don't want him to be in middle school sucking his thumb, or for his teeth to get pushed out cause he is sucking on it so long. He told us when he turns 7 he will stop cause he knows we don't want him too, but he hasn't. I know now it is become a habit for him. He only sucks it when he is watching tv, in the car, or sleeping.
What are somethings we could try with him? He just turned 7.
What are some of the things you tried to get your thumb sucker to stop?

yea he likes to play the xbox . ( started when he was 4) so whenever he didn't suck his thumb we let him play it for that long. but them he got older with school. so I had to make a rule that no xbox on school nights cause him and his brother would lie and say they had no homework just to play it. I might try the tv one though. with it being nice out they go out now instead of watching tv.

Yes, he waits until it wears off and then tests it first if it doesn't taste bad he would suck it. We tried this stuff called Thumb. Made it taste like polish remover. At least that is what it smelled like. and numbed his tongue.

I will be completely honest with you. I was a thumb sucker and my parents tried EVERYTHING to get me to stop. They bribed, they threatened, they made it taste bad - seriously every trick in the book. I would not quit until I was ready. When I was, I just quit cold turkey and haven't done it since. I would continue encouraging your son to stop - maybe even let him know that he is no longer allowed to do it outside of his room but I don't think anything will get him to totally stop until he's ready to be done.

How to encourage him. Now we just tell him to stop sucking his thumb. I sat him down and explained to him that when his thumb is dirty and he puts it in his mouth he is putting that dirt in his body and making him sick. He will wash his hands then say it is clean and put it in his mouth.

Avery is a finger sucker, not a thumb sucker. I don't know if that will be as hard for her to quit as thumb sucking would be.

I'm sure you've tried something like this but a friend of mine said she sucked her thumb like crazy as a kid. One day her parents bought Popsicle for the whole family but said that only big kids could have them - not thumb suckers. She could only get a popsicle if she went ALL DAY without sucking her thumb once. The first day she couldn't do it. She had to sit at the kitchen table and watch her whole family eat popsicles without her. The next day the same thing happened. The third day she asked her mom to put a sock on her hand so she wouldn't suck her thumb accidentally and it worked. She made it the whole day with the sock on and got her Popsicle.

I'll try that thank you. I have tried other things similar but he loves freezey pops so maybe I'll try those. He is so stubborn its hard sometimes. I'll anything at this point.
